The longest run since the cold, and no pain anywhere

DIST  7.4 km TIME  57:15 EFFORT  easy

Fifty-seven minutes on the road this morning. Easy, strategic walks folded through it, the usual patient rhythm. And at the end, the line I’ve been waiting weeks to be able to write: no pain anywhere.

This is my longest run since the cold flattened me at the start of the month. And I want to sit with that for a second, because of where my head was two weeks ago. Back then, tight-legged and still coughing at night, I caught myself wondering if my endurance had quietly packed up and left. Today I ran for the better part of an hour, comfortably, and my body didn’t so much as grumble.

The engine survived. I keep saying it because I keep needing to believe it, and today was the clearest proof yet: a near-hour run, no rust, no tight back, no “the illness took it out of me.” Just a man and the road, reacquainted and getting on fine.

The other thing worth recording: yesterday, I didn’t run. Life happened — a full day of personal errands that swallowed every hour I’d have spent on the road. And here’s the part I’m quietly proud of: no guilt. Not a flicker. A skipped easy run because life needed me elsewhere isn’t a failure of discipline. It’s just life lifing, as it does, and a training plan that can’t survive an ordinary busy day isn’t a plan worth keeping.

That’s the balance I’m learning. Show up consistently, yes — but hold it loosely enough that a day of errands doesn’t become a crisis. The road waited. It always waits. And the next morning I was back on it, running my longest since being ill, feeling strong.

Two weeks ago: flattened, coughing, doubting. Today: fifty-seven minutes, no pain, no doubt. That’s not luck. That’s resting when I had to, coming back gently when I was ready, and letting life have its days without panicking about them.

The cold had October. I’ve got what’s left of it, and all of what comes next.
