The itch of coming back
So the cold won the first round. It came in hard at the start of the month, settled into my chest, and set up a nightly coughing routine that dragged on far longer than I’d have liked. For once I did the sensible thing and actually rested — no running, no pushing, no “testing it to see.” I waited until the chest cleared, then the cough stopped, then the throat finally packed up and left too.
And today, properly clear at last, I went back.
Gym first — stomach and biceps — and then out for an easy one. My first real run in a week, and my body had opinions about the reunion. That specific sensation returned: love handles, thighs, even my ankles, all gently on fire. Warm, prickly, itchy — the exact feeling I remember from the very first runs of this whole comeback, back when I hadn’t run in years. It’s the body saying “oh, this again,” blood rushing back to places that had gone quiet, everything waking up at once.
It’s a strange thing to feel after only a week off. But a week spent fighting a cold isn’t really a week of rest — it’s a week of the body working hard at something else entirely. So the road felt a little unfamiliar, the way it does after any time away, and my legs had to remember the rhythm.
Here’s what I kept reminding myself, though: a week off changes nothing. The base I’ve spent months building doesn’t vanish because a virus knocked me down for a fortnight. So today wasn’t about proving anything or catching up — there’s nothing to catch up to. It was simply about coming back, gently, and letting my body re-find its feet. Easy pace, strategic walks, no heroics. A reunion, not a test.
And honestly? It felt good to be back. The itch, the warm legs, the slightly-foreign rhythm — all of it was just the price of admission for being on the road again. I paid it gladly.
The cold won the first round. But I rested when it mattered, came back when I was truly ready, and the road was exactly where I left it.
Round two starts now.
