The most responsible act of rebellion I've ever committed

DIST  4.2 km TIME  30:17 EFFORT  easy

I have rules. I made them myself, for good reasons. One of them is: Tuesday is leg day, and leg day is a no-run day — because you don’t pile running on top of freshly hammered quads. Sensible. Disciplined. The kind of boundary that’s kept me healthy.

Today I broke it.

But — and this is important — I broke it like a coward. Or, more generously, like a scientist.

See, yesterday my back complained through an entire run, still grumbling from Saturday’s soccer. So today I had a question I wanted answered: would the back tolerate a run if I made it absurdly, ridiculously gentle? Not a normal easy run. I mean reaaaallly easy. So slow that “run” is a generous word for it. The kind of pace where a brisk pensioner could overtake me and I’d wave them through.

It was, in other words, the most responsible act of rebellion ever committed. I defied my own no-run rule — while simultaneously being so cautious about it that no reasonable coach could object. I broke the rule and protected my body in the same breath. The leather jacket was, on closer inspection, a very sensible cardigan.

And the experiment worked. At that crawling, humble, ego-free pace — my legs were fine, and my back, the back that had so much to say on Monday, said absolutely nothing. Through leg day and a run, complete silence.

Which taught me something worth keeping: my back isn’t angry at running. It’s the hard, twisting, explosive stuff that provokes it — the soccer, the sudden loads. Gentle running, it turns out, it can handle just fine. And “gentle” is supposed to be my whole default anyway. So my back just handed me another reason to do what I should be doing regardless: going slow. Slow keeps the back happy, the knee happy, the tendons happy, and the whole eleven-month project intact.

So I’ll return to obeying the no-run-on-leg-day rule tomorrow. It’s a good rule. But today’s minor insurrection paid off beautifully: I learned my back tolerates easy running, I kept it safe by going absurdly slow, and I got a quiet back as my reward.

Rebellion: technically committed. Recklessness: none whatsoever. Back: blessedly, finally, silent.
