Nice, easy, and slightly spoiled by good shoes

DIST  5.5 km TIME  36:42 EFFORT  easy

Some runs are stories. This one wasn’t, and that’s exactly why I’m writing it down.

After the big weekend — the longest real run yet, a race that wasn’t — and three days off the road, this morning was just an easy run. Short, gentle, unremarkable in the best possible way. The kind where you head out, tick over the kilometres, and come home without a single dramatic thing to report.

A few quiet good things, though.

The shoes. The shoes are, frankly, too nice. I spend the first kilometre of every run in them slightly distracted by how good they feel underfoot, which is a ridiculous problem to have and I’m not complaining about it. Money well spent.

But here’s the detail I only noticed after the run, when someone asked how my back was: it was completely quiet. So quiet I’d forgotten it was ever a concern. A few weeks ago my back was the main character of this whole journal — the niggle, the flares, the recovery week, the chiropractor. And today it just… didn’t come up. Didn’t grumble, didn’t stiffen, didn’t ask for anything. It was a non-event.

That’s what progress actually looks like a lot of the time. Not a breakthrough, not a personal best — just a formerly loud problem going quiet. An easy run on a healthy body, good sleep in the tank, comfortable shoes on my feet, and nothing to report.

Some days the whole point is that nothing happened. Today was one of those, and I’ll take it every time.
