The pilates resistance has officially fallen
Let the record show that not long ago, in this very journal, I declared my pilates attendance a matter of national security. I was the man who refused the gym’s reformer class. I had a reputation. A boundary. A certain hard-won street credibility incompatible with reformer machines.
That man is gone.
Yesterday was leg day — a proper one. And then, legs suitably wrecked, my wife took me to a specific reformer studio for a free trial session. Stretch Studios. And it was… genuinely lovely. Not “I’ll never admit this” lovely. Openly, on-the-record lovely.
They talked about teaching us to properly strengthen and activate the core — which, if you’ve been following my back’s ongoing saga, is exactly the thing I’ve needed all along. All those weeks of watching my lower back, taking it easy, the Norflex episode — and here’s a discipline built precisely around fixing the root cause rather than managing the symptom. Turns out the core is the boss of the back, and mine has been quietly asleep on the job.
So we’ve decided to take up the classes. Officially. As in, paying-for-it official. (Well — Vitality covers four to eight sessions a month, so really I’m just spending a benefit I already have on the thing that helps me most. That’s not folding. That’s strategy. I want that clearly noted.)
And doing it after a heavy leg day was perfect — all that stretching and core work on tired legs felt like exactly the recovery they needed.
So here we are. The resistance has fallen. I do pilates now. My wife did this to me and I am, begrudgingly and with full core engagement, grateful.
Don’t tell the gym pilates guy. He must never know he was right all along.
