I did pilates today. This information is classified.
Let me be upfront about something: I do not do pilates. I am a man who lifts heavy things, runs slowly, and maintains a certain street credibility that I believe is incompatible with reformer classes. This is a position I have held with great conviction for some time.
I did pilates today.
Here’s how it happened. I woke up unsure I even wanted to go to the gym at all — my back had been giving me trouble since Sunday, I’d skipped leg day entirely yesterday, and the body was sending mixed signals. But I went anyway, because apparently I’m the kind of person who goes to the gym even when he doesn’t want to, which is either discipline or stubbornness and I’m not sure there’s a difference.
And then there’s this guy. He runs a pilates reformer class at the gym. He knows me as the person who has, on multiple occasions, refused to attend his class. We have an understanding. A boundary, if you will.
Today he basically frog-marched us in there.
What followed was an hour of stretching, core work, a little bit of legs, and what I can only describe as the whole body receiving some very unexpected love. It was thorough. It was effective. And somewhere in the middle of it, I realised I had completely forgotten that my back was supposed to be sore.
I am telling you this in confidence. He cannot know it worked. The man already has enough confidence — if he finds out I enjoyed his class, the boundary is gone forever and I’ll be on that reformer every Wednesday for the rest of my training block. Some information must be protected.
Then, a few hours later, I went for a run. And it was smooth. 4.97 km, easy, conversational — the kind where you could strike up a chat mid-stride and not miss a breath. The back held up completely. The legs felt good. Everything that was supposed to work, worked.
So to summarise: I did pilates under mild duress, my back staged a remarkable recovery, and I ran my smoothest session in days.
The reformer had nothing to do with it. Absolutely nothing. Do not tell him.
